At-Home Craft: Make Your Own Tambourine

It’s craft time! Join Sarah from the Seattle Symphony’s Education & Community Engagement team as she shows you how to make your own tambourine

What you’ll need

  • 2 paper plates (Don’t have plates? You could also use a Tupperware container or an empty toilet paper roll)
  • 1 tbsp of dried lentils, rice or beans
  • Coloring and decorating supplies
  • Tape or a stapler

Steps to make your instrument

  • Color and decorate the bottom of both your plates
  • Place one plate eating side up on a table, and pour your lentils on to the plate
  • Cover the lentils on the first plate with your second plate, matching the edges together and putting the eating sides in and the decorated bottoms facing out
  • Staple or tape your plates together around the entire rim to keep the lentils inside (alternately, staple half the plate together to form a pocket before pouring lentils)
  • Shake and tap your tambourine to your own rhythms!

Don’t have the needed materials? No problem!
