Composer and multi-instrumentalist Adeliia Faizullina has been named the winner of the Seattle Symphony’s 2019–2020 Celebrate Asia Composition Competition for her piece entitled Tatar Folk Tales. The Seattle Symphony, conducted by Tianyi Lu, will perform the world premiere of Faizullina’s work during Celebrate Asia on Sunday, March 8, 2020 at Benaroya Hall.

The Seattle Symphony’s Celebrate Asia Composition Competition invites submissions from emerging composers who find inspiration and influences in Asian culture, music and traditions. The reviewing committee selected Faizullina’s work after receiving numerous local, national and international submissions.

Faizullina’s piece is inspired by her Tatar heritage. The Tatar people are an ethnic group from Russia that have remained culturally distinct for centuries, sharing traditions with Turkey and East Asia. In her piece, Faizullina draws on influences from Tatar folk music and stories. An accomplished musician, she will appear as a guest vocalist with the orchestra for her world premiere.

Born in Uzbekistan, Faizullina is completing her doctorate at the University of Southern California. She is currently a fellow at the Gabriella Lena Frank Creative Academy of Music. Her music frequently draws from her background by experimenting with extended instrumental techniques, the overtone series, and unique instrumental colors.

“I am blind, but the world of music and composition allows me to imagine color,” she told the blog I Care If You Listen in a recent interview. “It allows me to experiment with musical shadows, to create the space of sounds and volume of musical form, drawing on the musical landscape of nature through instrumental timbres and human voices. I love the freedom that composition offers me.”

Organized by Seattle’s Asian-American community with the Seattle Symphony, Celebrate Asia honors and explores the rich musical traditions of Asian cultures. Now in its 12th year, the concert is an annual tradition where people and families of all ethnicities come together for an afternoon of cultural exchange and celebration.
